The Meaning of Life (for me, anyway)

In the vast realm of creativity, writing stands as a powerful conduit through which I can explore the depths of the human experience through my own unique perspective. It is not only an artistic pursuit but a mechanism that breathes life into my thoughts and ideas. Whether crafting horror tales or science fiction wonders, writing encompasses various elements that infuse meaning into my very existence. From the intricate mechanics of style and dialog to the essential components of tone, conflict, and setting, I often delve into the profound ways in which writing shapes my perception of the world. I write, therefore I am.

Writing is an art form, and style serves as the brush that paints the canvas of my imagination. Like all art, interpretation of it (as well as appreciation) is subjective. I may be simply taping a banana to canvas to some, but to others it is art. Through carefully chosen words, sentence structure, and literary devices, I create unique voices in ways I hope will resonate with an audience. In the realm of horror and science fiction, style plays a crucial role in building tension, evoking fear, and transporting a reader to extraordinary realms. The haunting elegance of gothic prose or the crisp, technological precision of sci-fi narrative adds depth and richness to my stories if I am successful. But merely in writing the words, I am transported myself, whether it connects to readers or not.

Dialog breathes life into characters, infusing them with personalities and driving the narrative forward. Through conversations, debates, and monologues, my intent is to reveal the depths of collective fears, desires, and motivations. In horror and science fiction, dialog can be the conduit for conveying existential dread, philosophical ponderings, or the clash of opposing worldviews in a manner that does not condemn or judge. It is through dialog that the characters in these genres confront the unknown, grapple with their inner demons, and embark on perilous journeys. It is also a mirror into my own soul, however unsavory and dark that may prove to be. As my inner voice speaks for the characters, sometimes they reveal truths about myself which I can reflect upon later.

Tone sets the emotional atmosphere of a story, guiding readers through a rollercoaster of feelings. In horror, it can range from bone-chilling suspense to dark humor, and with me that is usually a fusion of the two. Science fiction offers a spectrum of tones, from awe-inspiring wonder to dystopian despair. The mastery of tone in writing allows me to experience a myriad of emotions, connecting to the core of the human condition and imbuing my life with meaning. Tone is plucked from emotion, which in a bleak world such as ours is often dark and foreboding. Yes, this particular someone does need a hug now and then.

Conflict is the driving force that propels narratives forward and ignites the flames of transformation. In horror and science fiction, conflict takes on a grand scale. It pits characters against supernatural entities, technological nightmares, or the existential threats of the unknown. Monster, technology, subjugation. I hope to connect to readers through the most primitive of their fears and most basic of their wonders. Through conflict, I attempt to explore the depths of the human psyche, revealing strengths, weaknesses, and the transformative power of overcoming adversity. Yes, there is even the occasional optimism as a byproduct of conflict. Sometimes I get my hugs.

Setting acts as the backdrop against which my stories unfold, creating immersive worlds that hopefully captivate imagination. In horror, atmospheric settings like haunted houses, eerie forests, or desolate landscapes enhance the sense of dread and unease. Science fiction, on the other hand, “beams us” to futuristic cities, distant planets, or alternate dimensions. These vivid and intricate settings invite exploration into new possibilities, expand our horizons, and find meaning in the boundless expanse of the universe and the very purpose of being. For me, as a writer, it is just as much escapism as for the reader. Perhaps more so. It is an exploration on my place in the world through an interpretation of other worlds. Like any other human on the planet, I want to share my world with others. I do this through writing.

In my quest to unravel the mysteries of life's meaning, it is important to acknowledge that writing is just one piece of the puzzle that adds value to my existence. Religion, relationships, health, and society all play vital roles in shaping the human condition. These aspects provide a broader context within which my creative expressions thrive. Religion offers spiritual guidance and contemplation, allowing me to delve into the depths of existential questions and find solace or inspiration. Relationships anchor me, providing love, support, and connection that nourish my soul. Maintaining good health ensures the physical and mental well-being necessary to fully engage with creative endeavors, though I must admit this is a deficiency for me and something I struggle to improve. And society, with its diverse tapestry of cultures and perspectives, fuels imagination, offering a myriad of experience in which to tell whether positive or negative.

My writing, with all its macabre and sardonic glory, becomes a conduit through which I express my own understanding of the profound aspects of life. It becomes the medium through which I explore the intricacies of faith, love, struggles, and triumphs. It allows me to examine the complexities of the human condition, to question societal norms, and to challenge the status quo. In this grand tapestry of existence, writing becomes my voice, my platform, and my contribution to the collective consciousness. Whether it connects to an audience or not, it is an expression of my voice cast indelibly into the universe. A message in the bottle cast into potential oblivion.

Writing, with its intricate mechanics and artistry, provides me with a profound avenue to give my own life meaning. Through style, dialog, tone, conflict, and setting, I delve into the realms of horror and science fiction, where the extraordinary collides with the mundane and thereby aid in lifting me out of mediocrity if even for a short while. It is within these genres that I hope to confront my deepest fears, ponder the mysteries of existence, and explore the limitless possibilities of the human imagination. My life has meaning and value when I embrace the power of writing whether or not I ever connect with an audience. It is what “floats my boat”.

But the meaning of life is a unique human experience. Passion is so subjective as to be practically unrelatable to others. What floats your boat?
