The Lost CreepyGrams - ANIMAL PROTECTION

Here is another unpublished CreepyGram (a short horror story of 365 words, a two minute read). This is another escapee from The CreepyGram Chronicles, not appearing anywhere else before this.

ANIMAL PROTECTION

Animal Protection services had arrived. Ciriaco and Farrah were the accompanying officers. They held long poles with rope loops in which to lead out the dogs. Tracy knew it was going to be a difficult job. Gerulf, like his dogs, seemed to be cut from marble. And he was not happy.

“Sir, you don’t understand. This is not a request. We are taking the animals for their own protection. You will be cited and appear in court to plead your case,” Tracy informed.

“No, you don’t understand. These dogs are more than my family. They protect…”

The man trailed off. Tracy waited for him to finish. Through the entire process, the dogs had remained stoic and silent. Gerulf had trained them well, even if his intent seemed reprehensible.

Tracy motioned for Farrah and Ciriaco to take a dog out to the van. “No, wait. I’ll tell you. Then you will understand,” Gerulf said.

Tracy nodded. It was a formality, but listening to the accused always seemed to smooth over the interaction with the owner and animals. “Go ahead,” Tracy said.

“Come,” Gerulf stated, “I will show you the dogs on duty. It will make more sense.”

The three officers followed Gerulf to the basement. This must be where they have the pit fights, Tracy figured. But there was no place for people to take bets. Maybe video cameras?

Six pit bulls surrounded a circle drawn in chalk on the ground. There was a five pointed star drawn in the center and strange symbols.

“My dogs are not fighters. They protect. The previous owners of the house conjured demons. They left the gateway. My dogs keep them from coming through,” Gerulf said.

Tracy sighed, seeing how deeply disturbed the man really was.

Then, a slithery tentacle appeared from the middle of the circle. It tested the air cautiously. The dogs immediately barked and attacked. The tentacle withdrew back into the concrete as if simply underwater.

“You see?” Gerulf said.

“No,” Tracy said, “I didn’t see anything. None of us, did. Just another false report of dog abuse. That’s what I am putting in the books.”

The officers left Gerulf and his dogs to do their duty.
